Catching up with Tomas Mrsic
St. Louis Blues 4th Round Draft pick reflects on his early season success with the Prince Albert Raiders
The headline player from the St. Louis Blues’ most recent draft class, 16th overall draft pick Adam Jiricek, has notably been one of the more significant talking points for Blues fans and what the future may hold for him and the organization. However, the club has also done its homework and may have found a few prospects in the middle rounds of the draft for fans to keep their eyes on. One in particular, the 2024 4th-round selection, Tomas Mrsic, is holding steady as one of the top offensive-performing prospects in the Blues prospect pool.
Before starting his 2024-25 campaign, the Medicine Hat Tigers traded Mrsic to the Prince Albert Raiders. Despite his 23-goal, 62-point performance in 63 games, he noted his former squad was “stacked with talent” with many top-end players. However, the trade with Prince Albert has allowed him to be one of the top players, driving the play and taking on a leadership role.
Since then, he continued working on his development to help prepare for the future.
“I think a couple things that I've been focusing on is just my work ethic and my compete in the defensive zone is kind of what they want me to get better at (for the) next level.”
Mrsic has been working with the Raiders staff and weekly with St. Louis Blues Development Coach Chris Thorburn to analyze these areas in the defensive zone while maintaining a high competitive level throughout the game.
The young forward noted this development, and continued offseason work on his shot has attributed to his surge in production this year. With 13 goals and 26 points in 18 games, Mrsic is on pace for 48 goals and 96 points over 66 games. However, he could not take all the credit alone, noting his linemates, specifically Aiden Oiring.
“He’s a really good playmaker,” Mrsic said. “He can also put the puck in the net, so I think we complement each other’s games, and we’ve been doing really well recently.”
The season has been filled with statistical accomplishments and memories for Mrsic, but one that sticks out was the November 15th and 16th family weekend, when his family got to come to Prince Albert for the first time. That weekend, he scored five goals and seven points over two games, including his first hat trick in the WHL.
Having experienced his first Development Camp with the Blues, Mrsic noted the intensity and enjoyment he had visiting St. Louis and spending time with like Will McIsaac (2024 5th round) of the Spokane Chiefs and Antoine Dorion (2024 7th round) of the Quebec Remparts. Outside the Development Camp, he continued to mention his ongoing communication with fellow Blues prospect Adam Jecho (2024 3rd round). The two forwards know each other and currently play against one another in the WHL, growing up in various tournaments in the United States and Europe.
Looking toward the future and envisioning himself one day in the NHL, he wants to continue to improve his game, modeling his style after a Central division rival.
“I think I try and look at Kyle Connor. I like to use my speed, and I think he really uses that really well as well as his shot. Then he also plays on the defensive side of the puck, too, and that is what I’m trying to improve on.”
