Springfield Takes 2-1 Series Lead in OT Thriller; Jiricek Set to Join AHL Push

The Springfield Thunderbirds are one win away from advancing in the Calder Cup Playoffs after a resilient 3-2 overtime victory over the Providence Bruins in Game 3 on Tuesday night at the MassMutual Center. With the series now at 2-1 in Springfield’s favor in this best-of-five Atlantic Division Semifinal, the Thunderbirds have home-ice advantage and momentum heading into Game 4 on Thursday.
The game was a back-and-forth battle typical of these heated divisional rivals. Providence jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first period, but Springfield clawed back with a goal from Calle Rosen early in the second to tie it at 2-2. Both teams tightened up defensively in the third, forcing overtime. At 3:45 of the extra frame, Zach Dean capitalized on a fortunate bounce off a Bruins skate, finishing a feed from Akil Thomas to send the home crowd into a frenzy and give the T-Birds the series lead.
The Blue Notes Reinforcements Arrive
Adding even more excitement for Thunderbirds fans: reinforcements are on the way. Defenseman Adam Jiricek has been reassigned to Springfield following the conclusion of his season with the Brantford Bulldogs in the OHL. The 19-year-old first-round pick (16th overall in 2024) had a standout campaign north of the border, posting 19 goals and 59 points in 55 regular season games, and seven goals and 22 points in 15 postseason games with Brantford. The two-way blueliner also appeared in the U20 World Junior Championships scoring five goals and six points in seven international games during the tournament.
While a move has not been officially announced, the Blues 2025 1st round, Justin Carbonneau, is also likely to join the team shortly. His QMJHL series with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada wrapped up Tuesday evening, and the 19-year-old sniper, who lit up junior hockey with 51 goals in 60 regular season games will bring speed, skill, and goal-scoring ability to Springfield’s forward corps.

NHL Draft Lottery Adds More Future Firepower
Tuesday night also brought positive news from the NHL Draft Lottery. The Blues secured the 11th overall pick (their own) and the 15th overall selection (acquired from Detroit in the Justin Faulk trade). While they had slim odds of jumping into the top tier, landing two first-rounders in the top 15 should only strengthen what is already viewed as one of the NHL’s stronger prospect pipelines.
