St. Louis Blues Prospect Tomas Mrsic: Scouting Report, Strengths, and Development Path
Position: Center/Left Wing
Height/Weight: 6’0”, 170 lbs
Shoots: Left
Drafted: 4th Round, 113th Overall (2024 NHL Entry Draft)
Background and Development
In the 2021 WHL Bantam Draft, Mrsic was selected 8th overall by the Medicine Hat Tigers, a notable milestone in his early career. The young forward helped his draft stock skyrocket scoring 41 goals and 98 points in 28 CSSHL U17 games where he finished third in goals and points that season.
In 2022-23, his rookie season with the Tigers, he played in 58 games, scoring 9 goals and providing 14 assists. He also made a memorable playoff debut, contributing 3 points in 4 games. Additionally, he represented Canada Red at the 2022 U17 World Hockey Challenge in Langley, British Columbia, registering one goal and one assist as he and Team Canada went on to win a silver medal.
In the 2023-24 season, his performance improved to new heights. He played 63 games, scoring 23 goals and providing 39 assists, totaling 62 points. His offensive outburst propelled him to seventh on the team in scoring and fourth in total points. It was that following offseason that sent Mrsic, a 2025 third round pick, and a 2028 third round pick from Medicine Hat to the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for forward Ryder Ritchie.
Mrsic’s Strengths
Shooting Ability: Heavy, accurate shot with quick release.
Skating: Fast, agile, and can create space effectively.
Playmaking: Strong vision and passing skills, can set up teammates well.
Offensive Creativity: Dynamic in the offensive zone, finds ways to generate scoring chances.
Versatility: Can play both center and wing, adapting to different roles.
Hockey IQ: Reads the game well and makes smart plays.
Work Ethic: Committed to improving and putting in effort on both ends of the ice.
Areas for Improvement
Defensive Play: Needs to improve positioning and awareness in his own zone.
Physicality: Can struggle in board battles and needs to add strength.
Decision-Making Under Pressure: Can force plays when pressured, leading to turnovers. An area he is getting better at.
What to Watch For
Mrsic is possibly one of the most intriguing prospects to keep an eye on. Not only from a value perspective having been drafted in the fourth round, but in the offensive upside he could bring one day to the NHL. His current 29 goals and 68 point production has him leading the Raiders both goals and points, and tied for 10th in the WHL in both categories. How he finishes the season could earn him WHL top-10 scoring recognition and even a consideration for Team Canada’s World Junior roster.
After such a successful season as a left winger for the Raiders, it is unlikely he returns to the center position as he moves his way up the ranks. As he continues to grow and mature, he will need to add muscle to his 170 pound frame to help improve his board play against bigger, stronger opponents.
Projection
I project Mrsic as a middle-six NHL forward with potential to become a regular 20+ goal scorer and a legitimate power play threat. His speedy and offensive skills are similar to those of a similar Blues forward, Jordan Kyrou. Though he may not match Kyrou’s offensive success, the similarities are evident.
